Established in 1958, this Department has the distinction of being recognized as a Research Center by Visvasvaraya Technological University, Belgaum.
This Department offers an Under-Graduate Course in Mechanical Engineering and a Post Graduate Course in Energy Systems Engineering that cover a wide range of subjects such as Computer Aided Design, Computer Aided Manufacturing, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, Finite Element Analysis, Total Quality Management, Reengineering, Cryogenics, Mechatronics etc.

A sophisticated range of equipment, state-of-the-art facilities and well-equipped labs ensure that students get the very best of practical training. The CAD/CAM laboratory is well equipped to train the students in using ASYSS, AutoCAD 2000, NISA and other advanced software. ACNC laboratory with one CNC turning center and one CNC milling machine and a robot c serve as a flexible manufacturing system.

The metrology laboratory is equipped enough to be compared with the best in the industry. A calibration center is also being set up to cater to the needs of the industry. An unique Energy Park set up by the Department disseminates information on non-conventional energy sources to the entire region of North Karnataka. The Association of Mechanical Engineering Students (AMES) fosters leadership qualities and channelizes the aptitude of the students. The Department of Mechanical Engineering is proud to have an illustrious faculty that has ensured a high degree of success for its pupils who have done exceedingly well, all over the world.
